It's hard to make a movie about backpacking.

While the scenery is often beautiful, and there can be many high and low points, there aren't many cliffhanger moments that lend the sport to enthralling filmmaking. But Ian and Andy's from The Dusty Camel have just released the trailer for their upcoming film, As it Happens. And as it turns out, the film is about much more than traveling the backcountry by foot:

"As it Happens is more about the pulse of America. Our national parks were founded thanks to people like Muir, Roosevelt, and Albright, to name a few, who understood that sharing stories inspires awareness and therefore concern about these places. Thus, we created our movie, which hopes to share the story of our journey through these arteries of the USA, as we travel north from border to border. While we pass through amazing landscapes and some of the most remote areas of the country, the emphasis is also on the people we meet along the way. They exhibit extreme kindness where none is warranted, and as we are surviving with nothing but what is on our backs, we found ourselves thriving as we began to understand that freedom is enabled by a system of support. People are what makes this journey inspiring and the landscape is what makes it (aesthetically) beautiful. The excitement comes from the fact that every moment is a true instant captured, a linear story from A to B, recorded exactly as it happens," says Ian Mangiardi from theDusty Camel.

Fish, Parasites and Mud

We cannot get enough of the guys over at MotivFishing. We first met at the Overland Expo in 2010. They saw Cam’s (first) truck and knew NEMO was the tent company they needed to partner with on their next film. Since then, our tents and pads have accompanied them down the Pacific Coast, through the wilds of Mexico and into Belize. Whether you fish or not, MotivFishing’s Geofish movies entertain beyond your classic casting film. From being robbed at knife point (we had to send replacement tents and pads after that one), to getting the (veggie oil-powered) truck stuck in mud pits for days, to flesh-eating parasites, this foursome will make you laugh and wish you too could travel the remote areas of the world searching for steelhead, tilapia, and whatever else is on the menu.

Yellowstone Powder

If last night's 1/8" dusting in the Seacoast was enough to make you dream of face shots in knee deep powder, maybe you were really thinking about going out West.

Our friends over at KGB Productions sent over this video shot over 6 days of winter camping and skiing in Yellowstone. According to park rangers, they were the only registered winter campers in the park for the season (!).

Wyoming Triumph Episode 9 - The Absaroka Range

One of our favorite segments from the feature film Wyoming Triumph and one of the last segments we filmed. Lots of wildlife and big airs make this a must watch episode.

Winter's Coming, Right?

While it looks like the Pacific NW has a good base and the Rockies are progressing, we in New England have just about finished up the warmest November on record. Some of our ski resorts with top-notch snow making equipment seem to be producing a good base, but those of us in the lowlands and coastal areas are just plain warm and dry. Forecasts are conflicting, but for now, we're just praying for snow. To bide the time, here's the latest webisode from KGB.


And, while we're on the topic of snow, (or lack thereof), avalanche safety and skills are important, whether you live in the West or the East. So get out there and learn a new skill or sharpen your existing skills this season. I took AIARE Level I through EMS last year and it was great, but there are many places that offer the class.

Banff Mountain Film Festival, Recap

We just got back from the Banff Film Festival which wrapped up this past weekend. For outdoor enthusiasts out there, it is a pretty magical place to be celebrating outdoor spirit and culture, and to be surrounded by both amazing mountains and adventurers alike.

Mountain towns like Banff give off lots of energy, and it's not just the endless march of puffy jackets and beanies (toques for our Canadian friends out there). There's a happiness and fulfillment when you talk to people that you just don't see in the general population.

This year we sponsored the prize for Best Film in Exploration and Adventure, which was awarded to Kadoma.

Some favorites from the weekend to watch for as the festival rolls through your town:

Heading to Banff

This week, NEMO is heading to Banff, Alberta, CA for the Banff Mountain Film Fest. It's our first time going to the 'motherland' and experiencing the original Film Fest, the one that started it all. We'll be going for fun, but we're also sponsoring the Award for Best Film on Exploration and Adventure. The festival runs from Oct. 29th - Nov. 6th. If you're there, swing through the Laszlo Funtek Studio exhibition area and say hi to Connie and Suzanne. And if you're not going to Banff, you can catch the winning films from the festival as they tour around the US and Canada - chances are they'll be showing in a town near you in 2012.

And a special shout out to Red Reel Films' 23 Feet and Red Bull/Brain Farms' Art of Flight, have both made it as finalists!

The Art of Flight

As we discussed the other day, 'it's winter somewhere'. And while that somewhere was filmed last season, it's coming to a theater near you and us. For us, our new move to Dover, NH has put us closer to the ski movie circuit and this Wednesday, Art of Flight will be premiering at the Portsmouth Music Hall, very close to Dover. And, as an added bonus, NEMO fave Travis Rice, along with friends Pat Moore and Scotty Lago, will be making an appearance at Burning Boards snowboard shop earlier in the day.

Winter is Showing its Face Somewhere....

The boys over at KGB Productions have been combing the backcountry of Wyoming over the past two winters to explore, shred and capture on video, their adventures. From the cattle ranch to the backcountry, the crew has pushed their mental and physical limits to overcome injuries, heartbreak and frigid temperatures in the far-reaching corners of Wyoming's backcountry.



Over the past year, we have shown you webisode teasers. Well, the final teaser, the official trailer, is online now, or, if you find yourself in Wyoming, the premier is this Saturday, Oct. 15th at the Pink Garter Theater.

Fishing Has Never Been so Exciting

The boys over at MOTIV Fishing never cease to amaze us. While only a handful in the office are fishermen, their movies have kept us all entertained with the beautiful places they travel and the drama they always seem to find. Long Treks on Skate Decks Episode 16: Sale de Unuyi

Welcome to Episode 16 of the Peru y Boliva long distance longboarding trip. The last (and one of our personal favorites) of the entire series, this episode's otherworldly landscape is precisely the perfect backdrop to showcase Adam, Aaron, and Paul's otherworldly talents. It's worth watching. Check out Episodes 1-15 in our archives.



After completing our 2,500 km trek from Lima, Peru to Potosi, Bolivia we had some time to kill. We ventured around on flying carpets and came to the Salar de Uyuni, the largest Salt Flat in the World. We spent 2 days and 2 nights skating and sleeping on salt. To our luck we came during the wet season so most of it had a centimeter of water on top of the salt making the reflections amazing and skating a bit wet. Where else in the world can you skate through clouds, hahaha. We did find dry spots on the outside perimeter of the salt flat, which made traveling easier. The salt actually slid and rod fairly well, a bit cushy. Our clothes, shoes and boards however took a good beating. The salt had shrivel up our pants and made our shoes turn ¼ size smaller, haha. Some of the most amazing sunsets I have ever seen. Truly an amazing place, if you ever get the opportunity I would go there, Salar de Uyuni in BOLIVIA.

2011 Banff Film Festival in the Northeast

Collectively, our favorite film at the Portsmouth, NH showing of the Banff Film Festival was Eastern Rises, a fly fishing film by Felt Soul Media. The trailer is below, but doesn't even begin to touch upon the humor, sarcasm, excitement, and joy that you see in the film. More than any other adventure films last night, we left thinking, wow... I would actually like to hang out and get a beer with these guys.
