Snowy with a chance of knee-high sets

When the Mercury drops...

... we turn to Helio.

While surfing in the Northeast has its pros & cons, having to wear a wetsuit definitely falls into the con territory. It's not so much the restriction of neoprene or the added time to put it on—both of those, you kind of get used to (although putting it on cold and wet is another issue altogether). It's the hassle of having to care for another piece of gear, being responsible about washing it out, and being forced to wash it out inside your bathroom when the garden hose is a no go.

For those of you who live in sub tropical climates, New Englanders generally start to worry about pipes freezing around Nov. So there is a general shutoff of garden hoses from November to April until the weather gets its act back together.

Enter Helio.



I've been psyched to have Helio for my winter surf season this year. This morning, I hosed off the 6/5/4 out in the driveway, without having to clean up sand and seaweed in the bathtub. That, in and of itself, makes it worth it's weight in gold.

Here Comes the Story of the Hurricane

While people in the Bahamas are boarding up, evacuating, or watching with apprehension as category 3 Hurricane Irene makes her way north, surfers here on the east coast watch the reports with nearly (ok, its hard to compare) as much apprehension. A quick check on the Weed a few moments ago yielded this report for local surf break-The Wall, claiming an unprecedented (in my 6 years in New Hampshire) 23 feet of swell. Yikes.


While I know I won't be out in the water on Sunday, I wish safe and fantastic rides to anyone who braves it. Can't wait to see the pictures Monday. Fingers are crossed for a week full of chest high, fast, and clean to follow.

Perhaps we can even stretch those perfect waves until September 10th for Grain's Surf Re-Evolution event. I'm sure a bunch of NEMOites will be stopping in for the day of surf, fun, food, art, movies and philosophy. If you're near, come join in the celebration and conversation (or just come for the waves and food!)

Cardiff Kook Finally Gets Surf Lesson (from Pterodactyl)

NEMO's SoCal rep Dan D. sent over this little golden news nugget last night. The Cardiff Kook, a 16 foot tall bronze statue just off the PCH near San Diego, CA had a little makeover Saturday night. Forever immortalized in an awkward stance (whether as an homage to novice surfers or as a failed attempt at depicting a floater), the Cardiff Kook has had its fair share of tough times.

Saturday night, an elaborate volcano/palm tree backdrop was set up behind the statue, complete with a pterodactyl poised to pluck the Cardiff Kook from his frothy spray.

Definitely in the top 3 of Cardiff Kook-isms, no? Check out some other doozies:

Dreaming about Corduroy

Seeing waves like this would be like a dream, but a totally bizarro-world-freaky dream too. What's crazy is the mathematical function-y feel that the waves start looking like around the 1:00 min mark.

Sneaky Longboard Waves Today

A quick peek at Cinnamon Rainbow's wavecam (at The Wall) this morning shows some prime longboarding conditions. It won't last long, so wade through the snow to get out there.

November Beach Cleanup / Logging Waves

We were all happy to see that this November's beach cleanup only yielded 3 bags of trash (60 pounds total) for our adopted section of Jenness Beach, down from the 150 pound pickups of earlier in the summer. Whether this means that there's less littering or more people are out picking up--either way, it's good news.

Nate and I got lucky in our post-beach cleanup session. We were two of 4 people in the water who got to indulge in some beautiful waist high logging waves. We were pysched to meet Johna K., who caught this pic of me on a little left that seemed to never end.

If any folks want to join us on our next cleanup in December, please give a holler. We are hoping to get our friends at Grain Surfboards out with us with their demo van...
