Ascending Aguja Guillaumet

NEMO ambassadors and climbers Camilo Lopez and Anna Pfaff recently sent us some footage of their ascent of Aguja Guillaumet in Patagonia, located above the Rio Electrico valley and south of Fitz Roy. During their trip, Camilo and Anna traversed six peaks 5,000 meters in the northern Andes. We love hearing from them -- they give us all here in the office something exciting to daydream about (especially on gloomy rainy days like today).

First Ascents in the Miyar Nala

Long time NEMO ambassadors, Camilo Lopez and Anna Pfaff, have just returned from another successful trip to the Himalayas. Below is a brief trip report and video from their journey - what an amazing area!

"We just got back from our adventure in the Miyar Nala, Indian Himalaya and we couldn't wait to send out the news of our climbing. On the second of September we completed the First Ascent on the North Face direct of Dome Peak, 5700m on a very steep and technical face after a 19 hour round-trip push. Route: Lopez-Pfaff North Face Direct IV 5.9, 800m.

After enduring nine days of wind, rain and show, we finally got a break and climbed the First Ascent of the North Ridge of James Point, a 5200m rock pyramid. Route: Lopez-Pfaff North Ridge, IV, 5,10+, 600m."

Cheers!

Bolt Replacement in the Land of Aloha

Anna Pfaff and Camilo Lopez, two of NEMO's climbing/mountaineering ambassadors, are spending a bit of time in Hawaii, replacing worn out, rusted anchors. Here's a recent report from Anna.

Aloha from Hawaii!! It’s been quite an adventure here for the anchor replacement /rebolting mission here on the beautiful island of Oahu. I have been working with my climbing partner, Camilo Lopez, to assist Mike Richardson, the owner/founder of Climb Aloha, in the replacement of rusted, worn out bolts to new bomb proof glue in titaniums. We have been focusing mainly on the area of Mokuleia, located on the North Shore. “Moku” as the locals call it, has around 40 routes ranging from 5.8 – 5.13 and is definitely the most developed area around. Mokuleia has more route potential and the bullet proof basalt is of excellent quality. I definitely have my eye on a few new lines, but first we must finish our rebolting project making the area safe for everyone!!

The “Hawaiian Top Rope System” works well for routes with no pro or old rusted bolts!! We have been spreading the word about the new glue ins, letting climbers know they can now start leading without worry!!

Mike and Climb Aloha have been supplying us with all we need to get the job done. The bolts ,glue, drill and everything in between. He has been working on the replacement for a few years and has replaced quite a few of the routes already. Our goal is to help him replace the rest so all the routes will be safe and fun for many years to come!! Stand by for the next report. We are planning to check out a few undeveloped areas and hoping for big potential!!

More on the Miyar Valley, India

In November, we posted a brief entry and video on Camilo Lopez and Anna Pfaff’s latest first ascents in the Miyar Valley of the Indian Himalaya. This month, The American Alpine Journal published Camilo’s account of the two new routes the couple established in August 2010.

For those not familiar with The American Alpine Journal, it has been published annually since 1929 by the American Alpine Club and is internationally respected as the leading publication documenting the world’s most significant climbs. From Alaska to Nepal, each year all of the new big mountain routes in the world (except the Alps) are covered in its Report section, making the AAJ the ‘go-to book’ for alpinists and explorers.

Friedrichshafen, Summer Outdoor Retailer

As Connie mentioned earlier, we’ve been traveling a lot lately. For a small company like ours, when multiple events come up at the same time, it means most of us are out of the office. Ask Steve and Bill how much fun that is when 279 boxes of new product arrives and there’s no one here to help unload it!

Our most recent trips were to industry shows in Friedrichshafen, Germany and Salt Lake City, UT. At these shows, manufacturers bring their next seasons’ product line to show existing and potential retail buyers. This is where retailers make most of their decisions as to what gear and brands they will be carrying for the next year. It’s a great place to see what the next trends and new products will be . It’s also a good place to get a pulse on the industry. While attendance was down, there were new companies displaying their products and a good shift in presence—some of the companies who have been sleeping for a few years were full of life. The NEMO booth was busy as usual. We expanded our size this year to handle the 10 new tents we’ll be adding to our line next year and we still didn’t have enough room for everything! Feedback from retailers was positive and we’re psyched for 2010. Gear editors also attend these shows to learn about the new products that they will potentially be reviewing for the next year. It’s a good opportunity to meet with these editors face-to-face and get initial impressions and feedback on the new models.

In Salt Lake, the positive energy flowed at the NEMO booth throughout the 4 days. With visits from top retailers, a happy hour with Sam Moulton from Outside Magazine presenting our Gear of the Year award and athletes like Steve Fisher, Camilo Lopez and Anna Pfaff, we were surrounded by some of the industry’s best. After receiving our award, we paid it forward by raffling off a Losi 3P™ to one lucky OR attendee. Bruce Weber from Backwoods Mountain Sports in Ketchum, ID was the lucky winner. And 5 others won a brand new (not yet released) Ditto™ Backpack.
