Too Much Fun in the Office Rain Chamber

The new rain chamber is up and running in our Dover offices. Nate took a spin in its inaugural run this afternoon.

All that standing around and staring into a glass cage made it seem like a zoo outing. You know what they say: you can take man out of the jungle, but not the jungle out of man.

Granite State Goodness

One of the many benefits of NH living (besides 17 miles of coastline, "Live Free or Die" license plates, and lack of income tax) is access to maple syrup. Chris Hunt, operations assistant at NEMO, has delivered everyone's annual supply of maple syrup to the office.

Chris's family operates Sugar Hill Maple Farm in Sugar Hill, NH. The sap has been running since mid-March and we all feel lucky to be hoarding these bottles of liquid gold around our desks.

All Cylinders Firing

After a visit from Mike's Sewing Machine Repair we now have five industrial sewing machines set up and running—a big bonus of having more space in our new office.

• The regular Juki will remain the go-to machine.
• The Pfaff can be used for finer fabrics and adjustable stitching.
• The Juki bar tacker can be used to quickly connect or reinforce something with a very strong bond.
• The Nakajima cylinder sewing machine will be set up to edge bind as soon as I make a custom attachment, but in the meantime will function well as a regular machine for projects with difficult access issues.
• And the Merrow serger purrs as it overlocks and cuts fabric edges, especially good for knits.

Clearly, there is still some cleaning to do.

Dover Office Update

We felt like it was a great time to share some progress images of our Dover office. We have exactly one week until we are 100% out of our Nashua office!

The following images show various desks and work areas, some more complete than others. 100% of the construction was performed by NEMO employees. I have to say I have learned a lot, and all this construction has motivated me to take on more projects at home.

New Office Painting Progress

We are winding down on the painting project at our new office in Dover, NH. Still a lot of small detail work and touch ups to go but the major portion is done. Here are a few shots.

Stawberry Fields Forever

Today's Triva:

Strawberries are not true berries, botanically speaking. True berries, like blueberries, cranberries, currants, etc. have their seeds on the inside, protected by fleshy goodness. Since strawberry seeds are on the outside, they are considered "accessory fruits." I'm a big fan of gear accessories as well as accessory fruits.

What really gets me is that while a strawberry is not a berry (it's right in the name!), the grape, tomato, banana, watermelon, and pumpkin@! are all considered true berries.

All this to say it is strawberry season in New Hampshire. Cons and I went on an early morning bike ride from the office to Lull Farm to pick 'em straight from the patch. Here are a couple cell phone pics of our bounty.




As NEMO's move gets closer, we are appreciating more and more the incredible local agriculture Hillsborough County has to offer. Can't wait to explore the farmlands of the seacoast near NEMO's new space on two wheels.

Office Construction, Part 1 of Infinity

We're in the beginning stages of an office move up the coast. Instead of the Band-Aid method of moving (fast and painful, but ultimately short lived), we're doing the slow painful easing-into-the-space method of moving. There's a method to the madness though.

We're interested in the long haul, not the short term future, and making a workspace that is distinctly "NEMO" isn't a one week (or even a one month or one year) job. In fact, it took us 9 years to gradually transform our current space in Nashua from this

to THIS.

In other words, you can't force it. Our new space is in Seacoast, NH which ultimately puts us closer to the mountains and waves, and cuts down on a lot of our commutes. The space is 3x bigger, and will allow us the space to grow in many ways. In the meantime, we have a monumental task list planned, but are buoyed by the knowing/embracing that the journey is the reward (though, ask us in a month when we are in Hour 238 of painting, and we may have a different answer).

We'll all be giving updates along the way, but one of the first things to get built is a photo studio that is double the size of our current one. Forgive the low quality pictures, but here are a couple quick shots of Bill framing out the floor.

Surveying NEMO's Bookshelves

There's a lot of nonfiction here (unless you think BG's The Elegant Universe counts as science-fiction). A personal favorite of a lot of folks here is Edward Tufte (Envisioning Information). A great article was just written up about him here. I'll try to snap a pic of some of the other bookshelves around the office here.

Nashua Garden Hits Big Time

Our local watering hole, the Nashua Garden, gets a 30 second ESPN spot.



Do yourself a favor and "Beat the Buck" on Wednesdays ($1 a pint starting at 8 pm, goes up incrementally throughout the night). My favorite? Hitting up the shufflepuck table (upstairs and in the back), and then resting on the laurels of victory at the old ski lift chair at the bar.

NEMO's Saco Float - Where Did Summer Go?

Summer turned the corner and fall has arrived. We took a team trip midweek (before Labor Day) down the Saco in gloriously hot weather and managed to escape the usual circus that surrounds the Saco.

We found all the rope swings.

John showed us his fly fishing skills on the small mouth bass in the river.

There were the usual shenanigans,

and a night of camping on a secluded beach.
